Welcome

My name is Joel Pitt, aka ferrouswheel, and this is the central portal to the online me. From here you can bounce to my other sites, read about some of my projects, and access my bio and CV.

Identity

I'm a PhD student in Ecoinformatics at Lincoln University, and should be finished soon (one of these days). I've been funded by the Bio-Protection Centre of Research Excellence.

I'm an amateur DJ and go by the name JetPilot. I've played several clubs in Christchurch and Wellington of New Zealand, and played at the outdoor festival Kiwiburn.

I have a blog for writing about miscellaneous things, and also have a LiveJournal for keeping a record of the general ups and downs of life, although personal things are protected from public view.

Projects

I've been involved in several projects over the years, and I'm pretty sure the list hasn't stopped growing ;).

Modular Dispersal in GIS

This is what I've spent my PhD and three years of my life on. A framework for modelling the spread of phenomenon within GIS. Although I admit a lot of the time was spent applying this framework to modelling the spread of invasive species rather than just on the implementation.

RepeatFinder

An exclusive and optimal repeating DNA motif matcher. This, originally started out as me helping a fellow student trying to search for DNA micro-satellites. But as more specifications and conditions were added, it turned into quite a unique piece of software that I decided should be made available to the rest of the research community.

AGISIM

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Simulator (SIM) was a project I laid some of the ground work for, under the direction of Ben Goertzel, the head honcho behind the AGI system Novamente. AGISIM is a virtual environment for AGI's to learn and control an avatar within a realistic 3D environment. It was meant to have physics and interact with human controlled avaters. I had to pass on control of this project due to my PhD commitments.

NATOW

Nasty Armoured Tanks Of War was a game that I helped my friend Bob with - mostly with the website, testing, and a bit of AI work. It's currently inactive, so if you looking for a Scorched Earth clone to adopt and improve then contact me.
